Why Join A Bible Study Group?

For a Christian, there is no question or obscurity concerning studying the Word. We learn very early about the importance of Bible study. We know the transforming power it brings. But do we know the power of studying in a group?

Some Christians excel in personal Bible study yet struggle with group study. If you find yourself questioning whether it is worth it or not, I want you to think about these 4 reasons to join a Bible study group.

  1. Helps to strengthen each other

There is power in studying together. I have seen it and I know of many who can testify to the same. Personal study is great but studying together provides strength that you won’t get studying alone. It is like having a gym partner. Your study group gives you the strength to carry on when studying becomes difficult. It makes you accountable. On your own, it is easy to procrastinate or fall off the wagon. But with a study group, you have people to motivate you to keep going. People who will make the study fun again. Another source of strength is learning from people’s testimonies and experiences. This will go a long way to help you grow spiritually.

  1. Aligns with Jesus’ practice

Do you know that Jesus repeatedly created and joined small groups? Throughout His ministry on earth, you see that most of His teachings and fellowships were done in small groups. He could have called millions of people to follow Him, but He chose a select few as His personal “small group” – the disciples. He also gathered people of the same household and/or community from time to time. This practice was also seen among the apostles. If for nothing else, you should consider joining a small group because that’s what Jesus would do.

  1. You learn better

You have probably read Proverbs 27:17 (“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another”) but you won’t know the power until you find yourself in a group of people of the same belief and goal. These are your “iron”. By studying with them, you will begin to see things in a different realm. Your understanding will expand beyond your experience and knowledge. You will have direct access to learn from both students like you and those who have grown past your level. You will start to learn the Word better and deeper. You also get the opportunity to “sharpen others”.

  1. Gives you a community

Every Christian needs a community. The Bible tells us that we are individual parts of a bigger thing – the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12). This means that Christians were never called to walk alone. Having a community helps you to foster relationships and find friends with similar beliefs. It gives you access to fellowship with your family in Christ. Like your biological family, this becomes a support system through the ups and downs of Christianity and even your personal life. You are not alone.

Parting thought

Studying God’s Word brings power, clarity, and growth like you have never seen before. But studying God’s Word in a group brings even more power, clarity, and growth. Don’t forsake the assembly of ourselves (Hebrew 10:25a).
